You Ready for This Robot Boxing Flick, ‘Real Steel’?

Are you lining up for Real Steel, the robot boxing movie starring Hugh Jackman and directed by Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum)? At one of our local theaters here in Seattle there is a giant standee, featuring two of the metal monsters beating each other to pieces. One flaunts a mohawk (because I guess robots have fashion sense too?) and looks to be the baddest of the two, while the other looks rather ordinary by comparison. My guess is the mohawk guy will be the big baddie come the end of the film.

The thing is, I haven’t paid much attention to what this film is about even though I’ve probably written the synopsis about ten or so times in the process of publishing trailers (none of which I watched) for the film. So I gave this new featurette a watch and finally get the hook, this isn’t about a washed up boxer getting back in the ring as a robot boxing trainer… he essentially is doing the fighting himself.

How this whole thing brings the family back together I can’t entirely be sure, since I can’t tell if there is anything more than just Charlie’s depression getting in the way, but I’m pretty sure winning the World Robot Boxing Championships can fix all that.

Previously I thought this film would be hit or miss and I can’t quite say things have changed all that much. They have a clever little way of metaphorically getting Jackman’s character into the ring, and better than having him just be the trainer, but is it going to be too schmaltzy? I guess we’ll find out on October 7 when the film hits theaters.
