Ladies Wielding Weapons: Full New Galleries for ‘Straw Dogs’ and ‘Colombiana’

Sony and Screen Gems have sent over a batch of new images from their upcoming fall features which included three stills from Adam Sandler‘s Jack and Jill, but I’m more interested in the two films featuring a pair of lovely ladies wielding some heavy artillery. That’s Zoe Saldana (Avatar) up there with a bazooka in Olivier Megaton’s Colomiana and Kate Bosworth below with a shotgun in Rod Lurie‘s Straw Dogs remake.

Colombiana hits theaters first on August 26, and despite the massive firearm you see above, it will be the tamer of the two as it centers on Cataleya Restrepo (Saldana) who at age 10 witnessed the brutal murder of her parents by a Colombian drug lord. Cataleya manages to escape the bullets of the assassin and ten years later has become a real killer operating on behalf of her uncle, but her sole desire is to find her parents’ murderer and avenge their death.

As for Lurie’s Straw Dogs, you’re looking at an R-rating for strong brutal violence including a sexual attack, menace, some sexual content, and pervasive language. Yup, sounds like he’s tapped into Sam Peckinpah’s original, but has he also tapped into the menace and the meaning to go with that violence?

The film hits theaters on September 16 and centers on David and Amy Sumner (James Marsden and Kate Bosworth), a Hollywood screenwriter and his actress wife, who return to her small hometown in the deep South to prepare the family home for sale after her father’s death. Once there, tensions build in their marriage and old conflicts re-emerge with the locals, including Amy’s ex-boyfriend Charlie (Alexander Skarsgard), leading to a violent confrontation.

You can view my gallery of a massive 41 stills from the film right here.
