An Explosion and Plenty of Mean-Mugging in the New ‘Footloose’ Trailer

If you were wondering how they were going to get people to go see the Footloose remake, based on the final seconds of this new trailer it would appear mean-mugging and explosions are the answer. That and Kenny Wormald’s “Totally Pwned” facial expression in the image above.

It just seems so weird to see the same ridiculous story being told over again and for what reason I just don’t know. The idea for the original was loosely based on the town of town of Elmore City, Oklahoma where dancing had been banned, so the idea isn’t entirely ridiculous, but wasn’t it told well enough in 1984 with Kevin Bacon dancing in a giant warehouse and smiling as the glitter fell, screaming, “Let’s dance!”? I just… I just… Okay, it may be fun, light-hearted entertainment… Hell, I enjoyed Step Up 2 the Streets well enough, this can’t be worse… can it?

Writer/Director Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow, Black Snake Moan) delivers a new take of the beloved 1984 classic film, Footloose. Ren MacCormack (played by newcomer Kenny Wormald) is transplanted from Boston to the small southern town of Bomont where he experiences a heavy dose of culture shock. A few years prior, the community was rocked by a tragic accident that killed five teenagers after a night out and Bomont’s local councilmen and the beloved Reverend Shaw Moore (Dennis Quaid) responded by implementing ordinances that prohibit loud music and dancing. Not one to bow to the status quo, Ren challenges the ban, revitalizing the town and falling in love with the minister’s troubled daughter Ariel (Julianne Hough) in the process.
