Box-Office Wrap-Up: ‘The Smurfs’ and ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ Locked in a Tie for #1

What? A tie? Yup, The Smurfs and Cowboys & Aliens are currently dead-locked in a tie for the #1 spot at the box-office and we are going to have to wait until actuals are reported on Monday afternoon to declare a winner. But don’t think that means I don’t have something to say about it… Let’s dive in.
Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly ? Weeks In A Row
Captain America: The First Avenger was off to a good start, it ultimately ended up opening just shy of Thor‘s $65.7 million, and during the week it held up nicely and headed into this weekend with $91.8 million, $7 million more than Thor had tallied going into its second weekend. Of course, with school out, such a return was likely. It wasn’t, however, able to maintain the mojo.

With a $24.9 million weekend, that signifies a 62% drop from last weekend. The film now sits at $116.8 million on a $140 million budget. The big question for Cap, though, won’t be domestic dollars but the international markets. Just how well can this film perform overseas?

Weekend: $24.9 million (-62% drop) / Cume: $116.7 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #2 with $35.925 million, which is $11.025m off for a 44.28% error.
I don’t have international numbers, but I think it’s safe to assume the boy wizard and his eighth franchise installment are now billionaires at the worldwide box-office. After dipping 72% in its opening weekend, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 dipped another 54% this weekend, but the drops for this film are rather insignificant when compared to the opening weekend money and its overall success.
Weekend: $21.9 million (-54% drop) / Cume: $318.4 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #3 with $22.761 million, which is $0.861m off for a 3.93% error.
In fifth we find the weekend’s third wide opener, the romantic dramedy Crazy, Stupid, Love, which scored a respectable $19.3 million managing to land a smidgen higher than the $19 million it was tracking to secure.

When it comes to user predictions, newcomer “zlaja” damn near nailed it with a $19.5 million guess, nice work!

Weekend: $19.3 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #5 with $16.5 million, which is $2.8m off for a 14.51% error.
I apologize for continuing to compare this film to No Strings Attached, but it’s the obvious choice and it’s an interesting comparison considering it was unable to match the previous film’s opening weekend and now it has suffered a 50% drop in its second weekend. No Strings only fell 31.8% in its second week and actually didn’t drop more than 47% in any weekend until week six. Personally, I thought Friends with Benefits was a far superior film, but it looks like most people won’t find that out until it hits DVD and Blu-ray.
Weekend: $9.3 million (-50% drop) / Cume: $38.2 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #6 with $8.677 million, which is $0.623m off for a 6.7% error.
This appears to be the year of the R-rated comedy as Horrible Bosses is yet another one that will be crossing that $100 million mark in the near future, and while it didn’t make the top ten, Bad Teacher currently sits at $96.6 million and will also hope to scrounge up enough cash to do the same, joining Bridesmaids and The Hangover Part II.
Weekend: $7.1 million (-40% drop) / Cume: $96.2 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #7 with $7.16 million, which is $0.06m off for a 0.85% error.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon still holds a $19.4 million domestic lead over Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow: Part 2, will Potter surpass Michael Bay’s alien robots by next Sunday?
Weekend: $5.9 million (-51% drop) / Cume: $337.8 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #8 with $5.499 million, which is $0.401m off for a 6.8% error.
It will be nice come next weekend to never talk about this film again, that is until I have to pretty much say the exact same thing once more whenever it hits DVD and Blu-ray.
Weekend: $4.2 million (-52% drop) / Cume: $68.7 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #9 with $4.662 million, which is $0.462m off for a 11% error.
10. Cars 2
Currently the eighth highest grossing film of 2011, Cars 2 looks to finally be running out of gas (oh man, aren’t puns fun).
Weekend: $2.3 million (-59% drop) / Cume: $182 million

Laremy’s rank: Not Ranked

In other news, I would like to mention the weekend’s two best new releases that were only in 12 theaters total. In eight of those theaters was the “inner city vs. outer space” sci-fi comedy Attack the Block (read my review here), which took home $130,448 for a $16,306 per theater average. Winning the weekend’s per theater crown, however, was the Sony Classics release of The Guard (read my review here), bringing in $80,398 from four theaters for a per theater average of $20,100. Both of these movies you need to see immediately. Click on the links for my reviews if you need reasons why.

When it comes to next weekend, the results will be interesting. We have Rise of the Planet of the Apes and The Change-Up opening wide. Based on this weekend’s results I have this feeling Apes is going to have trouble and I’ve already mentioned, twice in fact, how much I laughed at The Change-Up, which I consider to be the funniest movie I’ve seen so far this year.

Oh, and I’d also like to mention Bellflower opens in limited theaters next week and I will have my review online next Friday, but it is a great flick, and one I recommend you seek out.
