Official Synopsis for Ridley Scott’s ‘Prometheus’ and Ben Foster Has Joined the Cast

You’ll rarely catch me dedicating a post to a film’s synopsis, but since I posted what has now proven to be Prometheus earlier today I felt it was necessary for me to now post what has now been issued as the official synopsis for the film that started out as a prequel to Scott’s 1979 Alien.

Re-written by Damon Lindelof (“Lost”) from a previous draft penned by Jon Spaihts (The Darkest Hour), here is the official synopsis (via The Playlist) for Prometheus:

Visionary filmmaker Ridley Scott returns to the genre he helped define, creating an original science fiction epic set in the most dangerous corners of the universe. The film takes a team of scientists and explorers on a thrilling journey that will test their physical and mental limits and strand them on a distant world, where they will discover the answers to our most profound questions and to life’s ultimate mystery.

Additional quotes from Scott give us a bit more insight into story as he previously told Empire, “It’s set in 2085, about 30 years before Sigourney [Weaver’s character Ellen Ripley]… It’s fundamentally about going out to find out ‘Who the hell was that Space Jockey?'” The “Space Jockey” (pictured above) he’s referring to is the giant being seen in the original film just prior to John Hurt being attacked (get more on that here).

The film is currently set for a June 8, 2012 release date and stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba and Guy Pearce. Theron plays a character named Vickers, Elba plays Janek, Rapace plays a scientist named Elizabeth Shaw and Fassbender will play an android named David.

Additionally, JoBlo has confirmed Ben Foster (The Messenger, Pandorum) has joined the cast, though his role in the film remains a mystery.
