Kerry Washington in Contention to Play Broomhilda in Tarantino’s ‘Django Unchained’

Variety has added a bit of news to the earlier report that Jamie Foxx will be playing the title character in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained by reporting we may have a Ray reunion in which Kerry Washington would once again play Foxx’s wife.

In Django Unchained Foxx will play Django, a freed slave who seeks to reunite with Broomhilda, his slave wife, a journey which will see him team up with Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz), a German bounty hunter, to take down Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), an evil plantation owner. Samuel L. Jackson is expected to play Stephen, Candie’s right-hand man.

Variety reports Washington is “one of a handful in the mix” in contention for the role of Broomhilda. There is no word on any of the other actresses in contention.

Washington played Della Bea Robinson, wife to Ray Charles played by Jamie Foxx, in Taylor Hackford’s Ray in 2004. Should she be cast in Django Unchained it would be the second time the two worked together.

Washington will next be seen in The Details later this year.
