Poster for Rod Lurie’s ‘Straw Dogs’ Harkens Back to the Peckinpah Original

To the right is the original poster for Sam Peckinpah’s 1971 classic Straw Dogs, which starred Dustin Hoffman and Susan George and today Screen Gems revealed their poster for Rod Lurie’s upcoming remake which reteams Superman Returns co-stars James Marsden and Kate Bosworth along with Alexander Skarsgard (Melancholia, “True Blood”). As for the poster, well, you may find it looks a little familiar.

The remake is due to hit theaters on September 16, and centers on David and Amy Sumner (Marsden and Bosworth), a Hollywood screenwriter and his actress wife, who return to her small hometown in the deep South to prepare the family home for sale after her father’s death. Once there, tensions build in their marriage and old conflicts re-emerge with the locals, including Amy’s ex-boyfriend Charlie (Skarsgard), leading to a violent confrontation. The film also stars Dominic Purcell, James Woods and Willa Holland.

I first saw Peckinpah’s original in December 2007 and wrote about it positive early reviews have me hopeful if not still mildly pessimistic. I know it’s never a good thing to head into a movie doubting it, but then again, that’s one of the best ways for a movie to surprise you, and I must add, remaining faithful to the aggressive nature of the story is a good start.
