Friday Box-Office: ‘Rio’ and ‘Madea’ are Neck and Neck for the Easter Weekend Crown

So the surprise this weekend has to be Fox’s Rio considering it made more this Friday than it did on its opening day last Friday. I guess those 16 extra theaters it moved into were in neighborhoods dying to see an animated bird get into some wacky trouble. Should Rio follow a similar trend to last weekend’s Saturday and Sunday it’s looking at a $40 million weekend, but considering people were probably off due to the start of spring break I’m going to guess a little lower and say $36 million.

As far as Laremy and Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family to come in at number one with $34.32 million, but after a $10.4 million Friday, I’m expecting it to come in second at around $29.5 million. At least, that’s what the history of his Madea films at the box-office suggests.

In third is Fox’s Water for Elephants giving the studio two of the top three slots. Water is over-performing as it was expected by most to land around $15 million, but after Friday’s estimated $7 million, that could end up closer to $18m for the weekend making Laremy’s $18.31 million projection look pretty good.

The Easter themed Hop from Universal took home $4.6 million on Friday and will likely end up around $12 million for the weekend.

The week’s only other newcomer to crack the top ten was Disney’s African Cats, which took in an estimated $3.1 million and should remain steady and end around $9 million for the three-day.

I’ve included Friday’s top ten estimates directly below and I’ll be back tomorrow morning with a complete weekend wrap-up.

  10. Hanna – $1.63 million
