Trailer for the 3D Erotic Comedy that Beat ‘Avatar’s First-Day Record in Hong Kong

The erotic comedy 3-D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy beat the first-day record set by Avatar at Hong Kong’s box-office last week. The film brought in HK$2.78 million ($360,000) from 73 screens on its opening day last Thursday, eclipsing the previous first-day record of HK$2.63 million ($340,000) set by Avatar.

If you’re interested, here’s the plot as provided by IMDb:

As a conceited scholar of the Ming Dynasty, Wei Yangsheng believes that since life is short, one should pursue the ultimate sexual pleasure as time allows. Wei Yangsheng encounters Tie Fei the Taoist priest’s daughter, Tie Yuxiang, on an occasion. With the former’s talent and the latter’s beauty, they fall in love at first sight, and Wei Yangsheng is later married into the Tie’s family. Yuxiang is elegant and courteous under the influence of her father’s faith, though her lack of passion cannot fully satisfy Wei Yangsheng’s sexual needs. His disappointment is no less than his affection for her.

In a hilarious quote, producer Stephen Shiu told the Associated Press, “We met people’s expectations. People have always thought that you need 3-D technology for this kind of content. So people were very curious.” Who are these people he’s speaking of?

The film isn’t exactly pornographic in the sense you’re probably thinking, though it does feature full nudity, but I am getting the impression it doesn’t go much farther than the not safe for work trailer you can watch over at Twitch.

I have included the safe trailer below if you’re interested to find out what the big deal is and why people from mainland China are heading to Hong Kong to get a glimpse. For a full review, Twitch has one of those as well right here.
