Will Streep’s ‘Iron Lady’ be an Oscar Contender?

The Daily Mail‘s Baz Bamigboye debuted the above image of Jim Broadbent and Meryl Streep as Denis and Margaret Thatcher at the recreation of the 1980 Conservative Party conference at Brighton in The Iron Lady, a film many are already chalking up an Oscar nomination for Streep. But what has me concerned is that this is a film directed by Phyllida Lloyd (Mamma Mia!) and it still doesn’t have a domestic distributor.

Of course, I am biased in that I hated Mamma Mia!. It’s one of those rare instances where I even have a hard time understanding what anyone would like about it. I know there are ABBA fans out there that can’t help but sing along, but even that argument gives me pause.

So, when I consider a more dramatic and serious film in Lloyd’s hands I can’t wrap my head around it.

The film does have international distribution with Pathe handling it in France and Fox handling it in the UK for Pathe with a January 6, 2012 release already planned, but domestic distribution still hasn’t been established. Bamigboye says the film may not be ready for the Fall festival circuit in Toronto and Venice, which would certainly hurt its chances at making the Oscar race unless it is able to find a distributor beforehand.
