‘Hop’ Tops Friday Box-Office and ‘Hanna’ Opens Strong

Apologies for the delay in reporting Friday numbers. I had a screening of Rio this morning to attend and the bigger news was the sad death of Sidney Lumet so I made sure to post that before heading out the door. However, I’m back and happy to see good results for Hanna so let’s get to the Friday numbers.

No surprise at the top as Hop will become the first repeat box-office #1 of 2011 taking in an estimated $5.5 million on Friday which should translate to $19-20 million for the weekend. This would mark a less than 50% drop for the film and give it around a $66 million cume on a $63 million budget.

In second is Arthur with an estimated $4.5 million on Friday which I am guessing will bump to $15 million for the three-day. Not exactly a great opening, but will still ensure Russell Brand as the star of the weekend’s top two movies.

The surprise of the weekend thus far is at #3 as Focus scores better than most expected (other my review, what’s the delay?

In the fourth slot is Universal’s medieval farce Your Highness with an unimpressive $3.8 million, which I don’t see doing much better than $10.5 million for the three day. Chances are it will be leap-frogged by Soul Surfer as the family crowd put the film in fifth place on Friday with $3.7 million, which I would think could total close to $11-12 million for the weekend. The Hollywood Reporter says the film is carrying an A+ CinemaScore so if buzz gets out there soon enough it could really take off.

I’ve included Friday’s top ten estimates below and I’ll be back tomorrow morning with a complete update.

  1. Hop – $5.5 million
  2. Arthur – $4.5 million
  3. Hanna – $4.2 million
  4. Your Highness – $3.8 million
  5. Soul Surfer – $3.7 million
  6. Insidious – $3.2 million
  7. Source Code – $2.7 million
  8. Limitless – $1.6 million
  9. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules – $1.3 million
  10. The Lincoln Lawyer – $1.2 million
