‘Sucker Punch’ Leads Friday Box-Office, but Likely to Lose the Weekend to ‘Wimpy Kid’

The titles of the two films at the top of this weekend’s box-office couldn’t better for those writers that like to spice up their headlines and articles with puns as Sucker Punch won Friday with an estimated $8.1 million, but it’s likely to lose the weekend to Fox’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Roderick Rules.

Sucker Punch‘s $8.1 million comes from 3,033 theaters and is likely to translate to $22.5 million for the three day, which would line up exactly with Laremy’s prediction. However, it looks like Laremy was about $7 million shy on Wimpy Kid as the more family friendly feature should do about $17 million over Saturday and Sunday for about $24.3 million and what I am suspecting now will be the top spot. Wimpy Kid also has the good fortune of playing in over 130 more theaters.

Elsewhere there isn’t too much to talk about outside of the fact Rango and Just Go With It will become 2011’s first $100 million earners this weekend. Rango is at $98.9 million after taking in $2.4m on Friday and Just Go With It is at $99.2 after $475,000 on Friday. Last year, by this time we had three films topping the century mark, which included Alice in Wonderland (ended with $334.1m), Valentine’s Day (ended with $110.4m) and Shutter Island (ended with $128m).

I guess the question now is what will be the next film to top $100 million? Your Highness? Scream 4? Rio? I have to assume Fast Five will easily top $100 million. Thoughts?

I have added the top ten Friday estimates below and will be back on Sunday with a complete wrap-up of the weekend.

  1. Sucker Punch – $8.1 million
  2. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Roderick Rules – $7.3 million
  3. Limitless – $4.7 million
  4. The Lincoln Lawyer – $3 million
  5. Rango – $2.4 million
  6. Paul – $2.3 million
  7. Battle: Los Angeles – $2.2 million
  8. The Adjustment Bureau – $1.3 million
  9. Red Riding Hood – $1.3 million
  10. Mars Needs Moms! – $525,000
