Box-Office Wrap-Up: Mar. 11 – Mar. 13, 2011

It was a mixed bag of results at the box-office this week with the likely #1 taking the top spot, a surprise to me at #2 and a $150 movie scoring a mere $6.8 million in its opening weekend. Sounds like we should take a closer look at things. Let’s do this…
Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 3 Weeks In A Row
This is the one that surprised me. I thought for sure this was going to drop like a rock, but I am happy to see it is finding and audience. If this film actually finds the “right” audience (adults and film lovers) it could really score well. The problem is that it’s just not really a kids film in terms of the DreamWorks and Pixar style so that could hurt it with families looking to distract the kids for two hours.

It was a near 40% drop from last week, so that’s not strong, but it’s still better than I expected and kudos for Laremy for having the confidence I didn’t.

Result: $23 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #2 with $24.75 million, which is $1.75m off for a 7.61% error.
I have a hard time imagining this one will be able to hold on for too long. It’s one of those “needs a big opening weekend” kind of films and that it didn’t have. Laremy overshot it as did many user predictions, some of which actually thought this one may hit #1. Oops.

However, there were other users that thought it would end sub $10 million. Ian, though, was the closest with a $15.1 million call.

Result: $14.1 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #3 with $19.7 million, which is $5.6m off for a 39.72% error.
Yikes, not holding on very strong are yah Adjustment Bureau. This is sad news because this means studios won’t look at this kind of a twisty Hitchcockian romantic thriller as something that makes them money. I have a hard time believing the budget was very big on this one and it has now managed just shy of $38 million in two weeks, but dropping a little over 45% from opening weekend isn’t what I wanted to see.
Result: $11.4 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #5 with $12.15 million, which is $0.75m off for a 6.58% error.
It cost $150 million to make. It made only $6.8 million opening weekend. Do I really need to say much more?
Result: $6.8 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #4 with $12.47 million, which is $5.67m off for a 83.38% error.
The Farrelly brothers are apparently preparing their The Three Stooges movie. I wonder if that will finally mark the end of the sibling helmers because I can’t imagine who that film is going to satisfy.
Result: $5.1 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #6 with $5.37 million, which is $0.27m off for a 5.29% error.
It only cost $17 million to make so I don’t think CBS Films was looking for much when it came to this horrible looking adaptation of the “Beauty and the Beast” story. It has now managed just shy of that number and will likely make enough elsewhere to make sure this isn’t yet another total bomb for the small studio.
Result: $5 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #7 with $4.64 million, which is $0.36m off for a 7.2% error.
Sandler’s latest is now $6.1 million shy from becoming his twelfth $100 million earner. It looks like it is going to make it, but boy was it looking dire for a second.
Result: $4 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #10 with $3.72 million, which is $0.28m off for a 7% error.
Is the PG-13 version in theaters yet? If not, what is The Weinstein Co. waiting for? The DVD and Blu-ray arrive on April 19, surely no one will go to the theater to see a muted version after that will they?
Result: $3.6 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #8 with $4.49 million, which is $0.89m off for a 24.72% error.
Producer Elton John recently ripped Disney over Gnomeo saying, “Gnomeo and Juliet took us eleven years to make. We defied all the odds and all of the people at Disney who said, ‘this wouldn’t be a hit’… They’re so ashamed, and they should be ashamed of themselves — they’re so afraid to congratulate us because John Lasseter of Pixar did not want us to make this movie that we still haven’t had a message of congratulations or well done.”

Gnomeo took 11 years to make and has now made over $89 million domestically. Do you think Elton deserves a pat on the back?

Result: $3.5 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #9 with $3.76 million, which is $0.26m off for a 7.43% error.

Elsewhere, Jane Eyre in limited release in only four theaters took home an estimated $182,317 for a per screen average of $45,579. Kill the Irishman took home $155,500 from five theaters.

Next week offers a rather diverse selection including the super drug feature Limitless, the Matt McC law thriller The Lincoln Lawyer, the alien comedy Paul and Win Win from Tom McCarthy (The Station Agent, The Visitor).

Unfortunately I won’t be able to see Paul due to screening conflicts, but I have heard good things about The Lincoln Lawyer, bad things about Paul and I have seen Win Win and can tell you it is well worth the watch. I’m curious though, which one will take the top spot at the box-office? Sound off on this week and next in the comments below.
