UPDATED: Olivia Wilde Rumored as Next Lara Croft

UPDATE: The Playlist was able to get in touch with Olivia Wilde’s reps and tweeted the following, “Olivia Wilde’s reps say Lara Croft story bunk.”

I have no idea what The Fan Carpet is, how they get their sources, or who their so-called insiders are but someone over there is claiming Olivia Wilde is the top choice to star in a Tomb Raider reboot as Lara Croft, a role Angelina Jolie played back in 2001 and 2003. Word has it the new film will be a prequel to the Jolie features.

This isn’t the first time Wilde’s name has been attached to the project as rumors started back in December when her name was mentioned alongside other candidates including Megan Fox and Vanessa Hudgens.

The Fan Carpet posted a quote from an unnamed “insider” saying:

“This would be a far darker and more serious Tomb Raider movie, the idea is to get a top director and an intelligent script and make this an empowering character for women as well as a popular one with men. Olivia is just one of the names being suggested for the lead role. She would appear to be ideal.”

When last reported back in January 2009, it was Warner Bros. and producer Dan Lin looking to develop a reboot of the Lara Croft franchise based on the Eidos videogame. Paramount released the two Jolie features.

Wilde was last seen in TRON: Legacy and has a role in the upcoming Jon Favreau comic book feature Cowboys and Aliens due to hit theaters on July 29.
