Box-Office Wrap-Up: Jan. 21 – Jan. 23, 2011

You can blame the fact this week’s total is down 30% from the same frame last year on the face Avatar isn’t around, but I’m not sure that means there is a silver lining as much as there is an excuse this wasn’t a great weekend at the box-office.
Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 3 Weeks In A Row
I must say I am a little impressed with The Green Hornet. After only $5.1 million on Friday I didn’t expect much over $15 million for the weekend, but a 46% dip isn’t as bad as it could have been. The film’s total is now $63.4 million on a $120 million budget. I’m just curious what kind of foreign box-office this thing can actually do. Anyone care to take a guess?
Result: $18.1 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #2 with $20.11 million, which is $2.01m off for a 11.1% error.
Laremy misplaced only two films this week and it was the flip-flopping of The Dilemma and Black Swan as he overestimated one and underestimated the other. Oh well, can’t blame a guy for trying even though he was still rather spot on with this prediction.
Result: $9.7 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #6 with $8.08 million, which is $1.62m off for a 16.7% error.
The Producers Guild of America top dog, The King’s Speech, has now surpassed it’s royal predecessor, The Queen‘s $56.4 million domestic haul. Speech now sits over $58 million and with its PGA win enjoys an Oscar bump. Speaking of which, nominations on Tuesday, have you been preparing your nomination predictions for tomorrow’s discussion?
Result: $9.1 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #4 with $10.1 million, which is $1m off for a 10.99% error.
What can you say? Personally this was my favorite film of 2010 and while it may not be racking up awards it’s racking up the dollars as True Grit has now made over $138 million.
Result: $8 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #5 with $8.82 million, which is $0.82m off for a 10.25% error.
Laremy predicted Black Swan would get a major bump from Portman’s Golden Globe win, but instead it just meant it didn’t fall all that much. Dipping only 26% from last week, Black Swan has now grossed over $83 million. The film is currently in 2,407 theaters and I would love to see it hit $100 million, but that would probably take some kind of miracle at this point.

However, it is Darren Aronofsky’s highest grossing film by a landslide with The Wrestler his previous top dollar picture at only $26 million. Congrats to that entire team.

Result: $6.2 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #3 with $11.26 million, which is $5.06m off for a 81.61% error.
How many Oscar nominations will this film get? And does it stand a chance at winning the top prize? It’s certainly doing well with audiences as I’m sure its Golden Globe success had something to do with its minuscule 11% dip from last week. Were you one of the ones to finally see it?
Result: $4.5 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #7 with $6.28 million, which is $1.78m off for a 39.56% error.
I’m still happy I haven’t seen Meet the Fockers or Little Fockers. If only I hadn’t seen Meet the Parents it would be a trifecta. However, I appear to be in the minority as this film has now grossed over $141 million and I don’t see how they can pass up the opportunity to make another one.
Result: $4.3 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #8 with $3.67 million, which is $0.63m off for a 14.65% error.
Yogi has now managed $88 million on an $80 million budget. Box-Office Mojo has its foreign dollars at $13.3 million, but it still has plenty of foreign markets to open in. Any chance things improve?
Result: $4 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #9 with $3.27 million, which is $0.73m off for a 18.25% error.
Last night Ain’t It Cool News posted news about a reported teaser trailer that was shot for a Tron 3 that will be included on the TRON: Legacy DVD and Blu-ray. Apparently three scenes were shot and will comprise the teaser along with what I assume will be a bunch of effects shots. They’ve even posted images from the shoot if you are inclined to click and see. With this film now grossing $163 million this doesn’t surprise me in the slightest. Are you game for a sequel?
Result: $3.7 million

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #10 with $2.84 million, which is $0.86m off for a 23.24% error.

This week was light on the wide releases and next week doesn’t exactly offer a fleet of impressive looking films, though I have hope The Mechanic will be fun and is there any chance The Rite is any good?
