‘Inception’ Leads the Way with Four Visual Effects Society Nominations

The Visual Effects Society announced their nominees today for the 9th Annual VES Awards and Inception leads the way with four nominations followed by Iron Man 2 and TRON: Legacy each with three.

Among the nominees one film is noticeably absent: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

The Academy has already short-listed seven films for the Best Visual Effects Oscar and of those seven Inception, TRON: Legacy, Alice In Wonderland and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 received nominations for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual-Effects Driven Feature Motion Picture. The fifth to receive a nomination in that category is also on the Oscar shortlist, Iron Man 2, and Hereafter was among the five films nominated for Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects in a Feature Motion Picture.

I would assume Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, the seventh film on the Academy’s shortlist, would be among one of the “Visual-Effects Driven” motion pictures. This means it could have been the odd man out, but this doesn’t help its Oscar chances as it battles Iron Man 2 and Hereafter for that fifth slot. I currently believe Inception, TRON: Legacy, Alice In Wonderland and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 are pretty much locked down in that category, but now my pick for Pilgrim at number five is wavering. Additionally, with Inception‘s impressive showing here I would say it continues to be the front-runner in the Best Visual Effects category.
