UPDATED: ‘Grit’ Over ‘Fockers’ at Friday Box-Office Once Again

UPDATE: I’ve added Friday numbers for The Social Network‘s expansion below.

Well, we may be looking at yet another weekend where True Grit holds the Friday lead over Little Fockers only to end up losing in the end. With $4.5 million, Grit holds a $0.3 million lead over Little Fockers. Last week the lead was $0.4 million and Grit ended up losing by $1.3 million. Will history repeat itself? If we’re looking at the same kind of Saturday and Sunday drops as last week we’re talking about $13.9 million for Little Fockers and $13.4 million for True Grit. I can’t tell you how much I hope that doesn’t happen.

As for newcomer Season of the Witch, it landed $3.7 million on Friday from 2,816 theaters and at best that means a $10.7 million weekend, but I would bet it won’t crack double digits. Country Strong is the week’s other perceived newcomer as it expanded from two theaters to 1,584 and brought in $2.6 million. For a film that cost a reported $12 million to make it’s looking at a sub-$8 million weekend.

Elsewhere it’s a bunch of Best Picture Oscar contenders with Black Swan taking in $2.4 million, The Fighter taking in $2.2 million and The King’s Speech with $1.8 million.

According to Gitesh Pandya of BoxOfficeGuru.com, The Social Network managed $185,000 on Friday from 603 theaters, which likely means something slightly above $500,000 for the weekend. I’m sure Sony hoped the film would crack the $100 million mark as it currently sits at $93 million entering the weekend, but that won’t be happening as it will hit DVD and Blu-ray next Tuesday. However, I would bet there was a larger hope to add $3.1 million to the film’s total so they could boast a $200 million worldwide cume, that… might happen.

Check out the complete Friday top ten directly below and I’ll be here tomorrow with a complete weekend recap. I need to sign off an prepare to watch my Seattle Seahawks try and beat the New Orleans Saints… any chance that happens?
