Entertainment Weekly is reporting exclusively that Robert Downey Jr. has signed on to star opposite Zach Galifianakis in Todd Phillips’ follow-up to The Hangover for Warner Bros. called Due Date.
The film centers on an expectant dad (Downey Jr.) and his unlikely travel companion (Galifianakis) race cross-country in hopes of making it home for the birth of his first child. EW‘s Nicole Sperling adds, “Think Planes, Trains and Automobiles with Downey in the straight-man Steve Martin role.”
Due Date was written by Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland, with a revision by Adam Sztykiel and a release date of June 4, 2010 has already been slotted.
The film will be the go-between for Phillips who is expected to direct The Hangover 2 for a May 27, 2011. Certainly it appears Todd Phillips is on a role and landing Downey in his next film ups the expectation that much more.
