So this is where we’re at as a nation, eh? We’d rather see films about Chihuahuas than decent movies. I get it. No more picking good movies for me.
#1 movie predicted correctly: 0 Weeks In A Row
It only dropped 40% as clearly Ember was woefully outmatched on the marketing front. We haven’t seen nonsense like this since Anaconda took two weekends back in 1997. Actually, I’d pay to see Anaconda Eats Chihuahua if any studios out there are reading.
Result: 17.5 million (My rank: #2, $3.7m off)
2. Quarantine
Very good word of mouth propelled this all the way up to second. It probably helped that is was the first legit horror since June and The Strangers.
Result: 14.2 million (My rank: #5, $4.3m off)
3. Body of Lies
I seriously saw projections in the $20m range and thought my $16.9m was risky. It’s going to be a long time before another film is greenlit that has anything to do with the Middle East.
Result: 13.1 million (My rank: #1, $3.8m off)
4. Eagle Eye
Back to normalacy! I’ve heard from friends around the globe and the consensus seems to be: Big dumb fun. As opposed to Beverly Hills Chihuahua which is little dumb pain.
Result: 11.0 million (My rank: #4, $0.9m off)
When people ask me if they should see this I tell ’em it’s harmless. But on a budget of $10m it’s definitely becoming pleasing to Sony’s bottom line.
Result: 6.5 million (My rank: #7, $.6m off)
6. The Express
The one thing people want to see even less than Iraq? Race relations stuff. Evidently we’re getting a bellyfull of that every time they show a McCain rally.
Result: 4.7 million (My rank: #3, $7.5m off)
It stands at around $36m dollars worldwide. That means there are at least four million really lonely people in the world.
Result: 4.6 million (My rank: #9, $.7m off)
8. Appaloosa
Although I liked this I’m not uncertain as to why I attended the screening. Only movie critics will remember this one in two years.
Result: 3.3 million (My rank: #10, $.5m off)
9. The Duchess
This is a movie I want to see succeed. But when it’s making less than half per theater of Chihuahua and Quarantine I don’t hold out hope.
Result: 3.3 million (My rank: #8, $1.1m off)
10. City of Ember
I guess the lesson here is simple. Parents are desperate… but they’re not that desperate.
Result: 3.2 million (My rank: #6, $5.8m off)
