I don’t get a ton of time to play videogames, as evidenced by the fact that I bought an Xbox360 a little over a year ago and when I did I bought the hit game “Gears of War”. I just finished it about a month ago. The game is great, the graphics are phenomenal, but I am not sure how interesting it would be as a feature film, but producer Wyck Godfrey told Coming Soon, “We’ve got our script on and a director we’re about to attach. We’ll hopefully make that early next year for the summer of 2010.”
Stuart Beattie wrote the original draft and the article doesn’t detail whether or not he wrote the draft that is now finished and there was no word. At one point Underworld helmer Len Wiseman was rumored to be attached, but that talk has entirely ceased.
As for the game itself, for those not familiar, “Gears of War” is a first person fighting game about a world reeling from an invasion by aliens known as the Locust. A small group of elite soldiers, including the main character Marcus Fennix, who is rescued from prison at the beginning of the game, fight to retake the planet Sera for its surviving humans.
The game is filled with monsters and creatures of all sorts and would require a TON of visual effects should it move forward. I can see this as a film that ends up casting a crew of WWE wrestlers in its lead roles to save money. I am actually not sure if they can do a whole lot with this flick, especially considering “Doom” had a similar one-dimensional storyline and was adapted into an awful film.
When the adaptation was originally announced back in March of 2007 it was set up at New Line, which has since folded into Warner Bros. There is no word on which studio will take over distribution duties.
