Box-Office Oracle: Feb. 1 – Feb. 3, 2008

#1 movie predicted correctly: 0 Weeks in a Row
I can’t believe I am taking this first with a paltry 680 theaters. My reasoning is simple though. They’ve already sold out 1000 shows, the movie is 74 minutes (meaning like 12 shows a day), and they are charging $15 a ticket in some cases for the 3-D. So I’m going with it. My fate lies with Hannah Montana. The world is officially odd.
Estimate: $15.0 million
Last year The Messengers did well on Super Bowl weekend. The Eye looks just dumb enough to do a little worse.
Estimate: $12.8 million
The previous Rambo movies have done even better than this projection – but after 20 years it’s hard to say how much juice this title has for weekend two. You’d also have to think this title will feel the most Super Bowl pain.
Estimate: $10.2 million
It won’t win another weekend. That’s wonderful news, isn’t it? I still haven’t found anyone who will admit being a fan. I suppose I never will provided I never seek employment in a glue factory.
Estimate: $8.6 million
They are advertising the tar out of this right now. Will it help? In a word… no.
Estimate: $8.2 million
6. Juno
Will this be the weekend I finally nail this title? It didn’t win a SAG Award so I’m hopeful that the universe is almost back to spinning on its axis.
Estimate: $6.9 million
How long has this been in the top ten? It feels like forever.
Estimate: $6.4 million
They should have to donate the proceeds here to a screenwriter school. Sure, they’ve screwed the pooch but there’s still hope for the next generation.
Estimate: $6.3 million
It dropped like a stone last weekend, to the tune of 68%. I’ve got that coming down to 55.5% this weekend because I’m a friendly sort of guy. Plus, at this number only 200 people per theater need to see it, like ten per screening. That’s not much to ask of people.
Estimate: $5.6 million
This is one terrible movie. I’m going on the record with my Super Bowl pick right now instead of talking about it. Ready for it? Ready? NY Giants 31 – NE Patriots 26. Get some!
Estimate: $5.5 million
