Box-Office Oracle: Nov. 2 – Nov. 4

#1 movie predicted correctly: Two Weeks in a Row
Gangster is tracking out of this world so I went and looked at other R rated phenomenons such as 300 and The Matrix. It won’t open as buzzy as 300‘s $70m against no competition but it will actually open higher than The Matrix. You see Keanu’s film was an odd animal in that it had such strong word of mouth that the $28m opening didn’t hurt it.
Estimate: $42.1 million
There must be some fatigue with this title. It is everywhere. Jerry Seinfeld actually came to my house and demanded I go to this. But I don’t have kids! He didn’t care. He can be a real bastard about that sort of thing.
Estimate: $35.7 million
This will face a hurting this weekend. It will probably end up lower than this even, who wants to see a horror after Halloween is all over?
Estimate: $12.3 million
No hope. Whoever scheduled this to release against American Gangster and Bee Movie obviously hated everyone involved with this project. Bee Movie in particular is pretty much the exact same demo, only with Jerry Seinfeld and a few hundred million dollars in advertising. Not good times for The Martian Child.
Estimate: $7.3 million
It was nice to see a film like Dan do well in a tough environment last weekend. I still need to see it actually, do I spend one of my Saturdays at the cinema?
Estimate: $6.3 million
So I went to see No Country for Old Men last night, classic Coen Brothers, but the real story was how goddamn annoying the old lady next to me was. She made a little noise after everything that happened. Someone curses on screen? She says “OH!” Someone falls on screen? She says “Ooooh.” What a knobjob. Why are people so crazy annoying at the movie theaters? Why can no one just shut the hell up? It’s no wonder I hate everyone. End of rant.
Estimate: $4.3 million
It’s made $45m overall. I don’t have any idea how to judge that number. What was the budget? How much did they spend on food? That Clooney looks like he can eat.
Estimate: $3.1 million
I’ve got it dropping 53 percent. That’s being kind, right?
Estimate: $2.9 million
If the first place film will make 20x this amount don’t I owe this 20x less coverage?
Estimate: $2.2 million
So the writer’s strike is imminent. Yet here I am still writing. Why? Because they don’t want me in their union. I can respect that view though. I probably would have just brought them down.
Estimate: $1.9 million
