‘Thor’ Talk from Matthew Vaughn

I have to first say thank you to any of you that went and saw Matthew Vaughn‘s Stardust. Granted, it only made about $37 million here in the States and a grand total of $54 million so far worldwide on a budget of $70 million, but by the time things are said and done it should fall into the black. I really hope more people find that film on DVD because it is truly a great film, just a great film that was almost impossible to market considering the size of its story. The only reason I bring this up is because director Matthew Vaughn looks to be dropping the softer more fairy tale side he explored with Stardust as he aims to take on Thor for Marvel Studios and he had a chat with Empire Online about where it all stands.

“Marvel were so surprised to see this other side of me with Stardust,” he began the interview. “They actually said to me, ‘You are going to make Thor more macho? Right?’ Well, don’t worry – Thor’s not going to be wearing a dress”.

As far as the story goes with Thor it sounds interesting as Vaughn recalled a meeting when he was initially on to direct X-Men 3 and he asked if they were going to make a movie based on Thor. Vaughn explains, “They said, ‘We’re just going to commission a script. We want to do it like Gladiator with Norse mythology and the birth of a superhero’. That really stuck in my mind.”

He was concerned about going from one fantasy film to another however, but explained the differences. “[It’s] a superhero film set in the world of fantasy. You’ve got Thor and Odin and it’s set in Asgard – it’s not going to be like Lord of the Rings or even Narnia. I think it’s important to keep it comic book. We’re not doing the Thor of Norse mythology. We’re doing the Marvel Thor.”

The Marvel comic first launched back in 1962 and the feature film version is expected to hit some time in 2008. For the complete Empire interview click here.
