Box-Office Oracle: June 15 – June 17

#1 movie predicted correctly: Six weeks in a row
Comingsoon.net has this in the $60m range. Huh? The first one was despised by fans and critics alike and every sequel has been opening poorly against the other 14 sequels it’s stacked up against. So there’s no way. Maybe it hits $50m, but I don’t see how this can outperform the first one. Lastly, I saw the first one for the first time a few days ago and couldn’t work up passion either way. It was just kind of there.
Estimate: $43.7 million
See? Here’s a prime example of a third version that didn’t open as strong. Sure, it was only a million bucks off but facts are facts, no matter how I choose to skew them.
Estimate: $21.4 million
You have to admire what this film has done, wading into the land of titans with nothing bankable besides the director. If you’re looking for the underdog of the summer (instead of the movie Underdog) this is it.
Estimate: $9.9 million
It looked pretty. Other than that it was flat. It will crush Nancy Drew, sure, but I probably could have done that. Hell even your mom could’ve done that.
Estimate: $9.5 million
I wish we could be the first site to say FF4:2 and Pirates3, so as to save me a hell of a lot of typing. But B-Luv is all about accuracy. And he’s much bigger than me.
Estimate: $8.6 million
Shrek 3 will evidently lead to Shrek 4 which will probably lead to Shrek 5: The quest to no longer suck. Go away Shrekkers, you’re not wanted here!
Estimate: $7.4 million
I don’t know anyone who wants to see this. But I don’t know a lot of kids either. Not to knock the marketing plan here but weren’t these books popular like 20 years ago? And why would that translate? Operation “uh-oh” has commenced.
Estimate: $4.5 million
Here’s another one that didn’t open as well as the first one. The summer is littered with them, littered I tell ya.
Estimate: $3.4 million
My bro just called from sunny Florida to mention he liked this one. He didn’t go based upon my initial review, as none of my family can read, he went on wanting to see something he’d never heard of. That’s the “marketing doesn’t matter” theory in action.
Estimate: $2.1 million
I was very close to putting DOA: Dead or Alive in this slot, for the poster alone, but I don’t think it will clear 4k per screen.
Estimate: $2.0 million
