Box-Office Oracle: June 8 – June 10

#1 movie predicted correctly: Five weeks in a row
Ocean’s will win and it won’t be close. What will be more interesting to hear about is where this ranks for people among the three. I can’t imagine it being higher than third.
Estimate: $45.4 million
B-Luv was asking what the box office difference is between this and Happy Feet. I originally didn’t know. But after looking at the previous penguin flick I’ve determined the difference is competition. Happy Feet had none on the family movie front. Surf’s Up has enough to derail it both this week and next.
Estimate: $28.2 million
Dre just saw it and liked it. That’s two against one, so let’s call B-Luv’s opinion wrong. There, now that’s taken care of.
Estimate: $18.9 million
The release date cost this one around $150m. If it had come out first, before Spider-Man 3, it would have mopped up all the easy summer dollars.
Estimate: $18.8 million
What hurts this one, and this is becoming a theme, is the competition. No, there isn’t another thriller out, but Ocean’s 13 is the same young audience. That’s why I’ve got it opening at $2500 less per theater than the first one. I’ll probably be around halfway wrong.
Estimate: $15.0 million
What’s annoying is the complete lack of standards on sequel names. In the top six we’ve got four different types of sequel names. It really makes you miss the days of Jaws 2 doesn’t it?
Estimate: $14.4 million
Well, this week will show us how far off I am on this one’s word of mouth. Anything bellow $5m means people didn’t dig it. Anything above means they did. Don’t let me down guys, even if you have to see it twice.
Estimate: $6.1 million
They should just pull this one from theaters and get people hyped up for the DVD.
Estimate: $3.5 million
How do you define success here? Waitress was never going to be a massive movie but isn’t it hanging in the top ten for a few weeks impressive? I think it is. And for the sake of this column that’s really all that matters, eh?
Estimate: $1.8 million
10. Gracie
When I spoke to Andrew Shue I don’t think he formally introduced himself. That’s an easy way to curse your movie bud. I’m not the best in the business for my good looks.
Estimate: $.6 million
