No 3-Day Record for ‘Pirates 3’

Laremy will be giving you the complete weekend update tomorrow once the 4-day holiday weekend numbers are out, but I thought I would give you the record update now that the 3-day numbers are out and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End fell quite short from the 3-day weekend record set by Spider-Man 3 only three weeks ago.

Spider-Man 3 created the record at $151 million opening in 4,252 theaters and Pirates 3, despite opening in a record number of theaters at 4,362, managed only $112.5 million, which actually was even less than Shrek the Third last weekend at $121.6 million. It looks to me like the fact that Spidey 3 still pulled in $13.7 million and Shrek 3 had a rather large fall off but still significant $51 million that it stole some of that Pirates thunder, especially when you consider that Spider-Man 3 opened against virtually nothing and was the first large blockbuster of the season.

For now, I think that is enough analysis from me, enjoy the rest of the weekend and check back tomorrow for the four-day estimates along with Laremy’s Weekend Wrap-Up.
