Rodriguez Directing ‘Barbarella’ Remake

I can’t remember where I read it, but after the monetary failure of Grindhouse someone was debating how much it would hurt the career of Robert Rodriguez as they said Tarantino didn’t really have to worry since he is pretty much golden. Well, considering Rodriguez has already been handed the director duties for the live-action feature film version of The Jetsons and now the remake duties on Barbarella I think we can safely say his career is intact.

Variety reports Rodriguez will direct the remake of the 1968 film that starred Jane Fonda for Universal Pictures with a 2008 release in mind.

The script is being rewritten by Casino Royale scribes, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, as they aim to bring back the futuristic mercenary to the big screen.

Rodriguez was quoted saying, “I love this iconic character and all that she represents, and I’m truly excited by the challenge of inviting a new audience into her universe.”

Considering the movie will be 40 years old by the time the remake hits the screen I think it is a perfect time to give it a revamp and I hope Rogriguez pulls it off, preferably without Rose McGowan in the title role, although I wouldn’t put it past him.
