Maria Bello Replaces Weisz in ‘Mummy 3’!

Maria Bello has blonde hair. Rachel Weisz has black hair.

Maria Bello is an American from Norristown, Pennsylvania. Rachel Weisz is a Brit from London, England.

Now that you know those two facts please tell me how you replace Weisz with Bello in the upcoming sequel The Mummy 3.

The news is brought to us from Variety that that is just the case as Bello will join Brendan Fraser, Luke Ford, Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh in the Rob Cohen-directed film for Universal Pictures as Evelyn Carnahan O’Connell, the adventuress played in the first two films by Weisz.

Now I have nothing against Bello at all, I actually think she is a great actress, but this makes no sense to me. Weisz declined to reprise her role for a reason and I can guarantee you it wasn’t because of money. My guess, and it seems rather obvious, is that the script sucks. So, why not bring someone in to rewrite the Miles Millar and Alfred Gough script so that Weisz may consider playing the role? Or, better yet, if she is dead set against returning rewrite the script to not include the character. These are easy solutions, but of course they cost money. However, they are solutions that will most likely bring you a movie people will enjoy more. Just think how good Spider-Man 3 could have been had someone been brought in to rewrite some of that shitty dialogue.

The Mummy 3 brings the O’Connells and their full-grown son (Ford) to the forbidden tombs of China and the Himalayas, where they battle a shape-shifting mummy, a former Chinese emperor (Li) cursed by a wizard (Yeoh).

I am sure Bello will be fine in the role and I may even enjoy the movie, but the fact that Weisz declined to return sticks in my craw (yeah, I used the word craw).

The Mummy 3 is tentative scheduled to release July 18, 2008.

If you have any thoughts on this, or disagree express it in the comments. Am I making too big of a deal about this?
