I have not yet seen Hannibal Rising>, but the book is sitting on my coffee table and I actually plan on digging into it this weekend and fully expect to finish it inside of two days because there is no chance in hell I will go see the film adaptation before reading it. Honestly, has anyone that has seen the trailer actually found it to look in any way interesting? Is it just me or does knowing the origin of the character completely ruin the mystique that was Hannibal Lecter?
Personally I think it is scarier to not know what motivates a killer, a killer that kills and kills for reasons that are completely unknown is super scary. Take Hannibal for instance. I did enjoy the film, but it does have Lecter doing a bit of killing and for a reason, but if you read the book that reason is so much better and more realized it isn’t even comprable. I am hoping the same goes for Hannibal Rising, and if producer Dino de Laurentiis is to be believed we may even have another young Lecter story.
In an interview with MTV de Laurentiis tells the site the following:
How many James Bond [movies are] there? … Every two years a James Bond movie [seemingly] comes out,” de Laurentiis reasoned, adding that any future Lecter story would likely center on the unusual relationship between Lecter and his “Rising” love interest, Gong Li. “You see in the movie that … it’s an attraction, but nothing serious happens,” de Laurentiis said. “In the future, maybe something happens, if we go with [another sequel].”
Sure doesn’t sound interesting to me and I have to believe he eats her too in the end (wow, that can be considered a very dirty statement), but we will just have to wait and see.
Hannibal Rising hits theaters on February 9, click here for more info.
