More ‘Departed’ Sequel and Prequel Talk

Let me begin by saying, Don’t Read This Article If You Don’t Want Spoilers! If you haven’t seen the movie yet come on back after watching it in theaters, The Departed was re-released yah know? It hits DVD on February 13th so maybe you can bookmark this article and come on back after seeing it at home.

Anyway, back on January 20 he quoted an interview done at ShowBizData with Mark Wahlberg in which he said, “We may do another one,” in regards to The Departed and now Variety is reporting that screenwriter William Monahan is giving it a go despite the fact that basically everyone is dead. Except of course Wahlberg who delivers the final blow to Damon at the end of the film.

The interesting point is centered around that Damon kill. The Departed is an American remake of the Hong Kong crime drama Infernal Affairs of which had two sequels, the first was a prequel and the third film in the franchise was centered on the Damon character, who did not die in the Hong Kong flick.

So what are the chances? Looking back at Scorcese’s track record I do see The Color of Money, which was sort of a sequel to The Hustler, but he didn’t direct the original so I don’t really think it counts. Then again, the guy has some serious pull in Hollywood and could probably get just about anyone so who knows.

Variety speculates Marty might come back as a producer but not to direct, but they also reiterate that neither Marty or Warner Bros. has shown any sign as to persue a follow-up, but if the script is a good one I am sure it won’t end at one.
