The last time The Mummy franchise was placed in the hands of someone other than franchise creator Stephen Sommers we were given The Scorpion King, a.k.a. The Bad Mummy Franchise Movie. While I will be the first one to say that Sommers is far from a brilliant director (ie. Van Helsing) he does seem to have a lock on these Mummy films. So, when TMZ reports that xXx and The Fast and the Furious director Rob Cohen is going to take on The Mummy 3 I proceed to scratch my head… *itch*
Yup, the word out of the gossip rag is that Cohen is in negotiations to direct the third incarnation of The Mummy franchise at Universal Pictures, a film both Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are reportedly ready to reprise their roles as Mr. and Mrs. O’Connell.
Considering Cohen’s last film was Stealth, a.k.a. One of the Worst Movies I Have Ever Seen, it is sort of a surprise that Universal would go this route, but his past has had a level of success in the popcorn flick so we will have to wait and see as TMZ tells us to “look for Universal to make the formal offer to Cohen sometime later this week.”
