So, I finally saw Pan’s Labyrinth two nights ago and now I hear Guillermo del Toro is being sought after to direct a Tarzan movie for Warner Bros. and producer Jerry Weintraub. For anyone that has seen any of del Toro’s films, be it The Devil’s Backbone, Blade II, Hellboy or Pan’s you realize this is one hell of an idea and with major studio backing Guillermo could turn a Tarzan film into one of the most visually arresting and emotional films ever.
Based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs-created character the film is said to be eyeing a new take on the ape boy. Master and Commander: Far Side of the World and Happy Feet scribe, John Collee, is in negotiations to pen the screenplay.
Del Toro was quoted saying, “I’d love to create a new version that is still a family movie, but as edgy as I can make it… There are strong themes of survival of a defenseless child left behind in the most hostile environment.”
He continued, “John will be writing it alone, as I’ll be in production on Hellboy 2 and pursuing writing projects of my own… He’s got a great sense of adventure and the wilderness.”
