‘Angels and Demons’ On the Move at Sony

I guess the big question now is whether or not a film adaptation of Dan Brown’s “Angels and Demons” will stir up as much controversy as did The Da Vinci Code, because Columbia Pictures has already brought on board Da Vinci Code scribe Akiva Goldsman to pen the adaptation of “Demons”.

We can certainly attribute the quick move to Da Vinic Code‘s awesome $231.8 million worldwide take in its first five days. Word is that no deals are set yet for director Ron Howard or star Tom Hanks to return, but both would have first crack at the project as the studio’s also planning to reassemble The Da Vinci Code producing team of Brian Grazer and John Calley for the project.

“Angels & Demons,” published in 2000, introduced the Langdon character played by Hanks in Code and centers on the character as he tries to solve a murder and unravel a plot by an ancient group, the Illuminati, to blow up the Vatican during a papal conclave.

Hmmmm… a plot to blow up the Vatican eh? I guess I can see where controversy would brew, since I have not yet read “Angels” I don’t know how things play out, but considering I have been told it is the better of the two Brown novels I may have to give it a shot.

The rights to “Angels” was acquired by Sony at the same time it nabbed “The Da Vinci Code”.
