Nair Ready for ‘Gangsta M.D.’

Whether she was offered the Harry Potter 5 helm or not, turning it down to do this film may prove to be a mistake as Mira Nair, the recent director of Reese Witherspoon‘s Vanity Fair, has signed on to direct Gangsta M.D. for 20th Century Fox.

The film was written by Bringing Down the House scribe Jason Filardi and focuses on a low-level gangster who keeps his criminal life a secret from his mother by telling her he is a medical doctor. When his mom discovers his criminal lifestyle and threatens to disown him, he’s forced to do the one thing that would make her proud: become a doctor.

Apparently this is a remake of a 2003 Hindu-language film, which subsequently also has a Telugu-language remake. So possibly the success is already written in the history of the story, but I just can’t quite get aboard this storyline just yet.
