‘Shrek 2’ Sets a 3-Day DVD Sales Record

What worked at the box office apparently works at home as DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. today reported that home video sales of DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek 2 generated an estimated $185 million in retail revenue. Giving retailers a “fairytale” beginning to the Holiday sales season, 12.1 million Shrek 2 DVDs and videocassettes were sold since its Friday, November 5th release.

Of the 12.1 million units sold in the first three days of the title’s release, a record 11 million were DVDs. Shrek 2 eclipsed the original Shrek, which sold over 7 million units in the first three days of its 2001 release.

“This record pace is reflective of the movie’s broad appeal — everyone from kids, parents and general audiences are adding Shrek 2 to their DVD library, ” said Kelley Avery, worldwide head of DreamWorks Home Entertainment, the distributor of Shrek 2. “With the Shrek 2 marketing campaign now in full swing and an extensive effort continuing through the holidays, our replenishment efforts are fully underway.”

Shrek 2, which opened on May 18, 2004, was the third highest grossing film of all time in the domestic box office, achieved the highest domestic box office gross of any animated film, had the most successful three-day opening weekend of any animated film and broke the single-day box office sales record for any film grossing $44.8 million and was the most widely distributed film ever in the domestic theatrical market (playing in 4,223 theaters at its peak).
