VH-1 Celebrates ‘Scarface’ With a ‘Playa’s Guide to Scarface’

In lieu of the celebration of Universal Studio’s 20th anniversary of Scarface with its limited theatrical re-release and special edition 2-disc DVD release, VH1 presents “Playa’s Guide to Scarface,” a half-hour special which celebrates the movie Scarface and the impact it has made on hip-hop culture in the last 20 years. Some of today’s hottest rap artists, record label CEO’s, video directors, actors, comedians and respected journalists will comment on some of the film’s most memorable and influential scenes.

In everything from the storylines of their videos to the interior design of their own homes, hip-hop artists have fully incorporated the Scarface aesthetic into their lives, and have made Tony Montana a cultural icon. Premiering on VH1 on Thursday, September 25 at 10:00 PM, “Playa’s Guide to Scarface,” features interviews with Fat Joe, Ja Rule, Dave Meyers (Music Video Director), Damon Dash (CEO Rock-a-Fella Records), Ice Cube, Wyclef Jean and many others who provide some additional insight on how and why Scarface has had such a significant affect upon hip-hop culture and music.

Here’s what a few have to say about the incredible influence of Scarface:

Method Man: “Everybody and their momma done put a little Scarface in their video man.”

ELLIOT WILSON (EDITOR OF XXL): “It’s almost like if you don’t know the movie or if you don’t have anything connected to the movie you’re not authentic, you’re not hip-hop.”

Ice Cube: “Everybody’s trying to go the top, everybody’s got a little bit of attitude with them you know. Everybody’s got a little bit of Tony Montana in ’em.

MICHAELA ANGELA DAVIS (EDITOR OF HONEY MAGAZINE): “The last part of the movie was like a classic Shakespeare movie, you know, everybody’s dead at the end.”
