On Sunday, September 21, 2008, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences awarded the 2007-2008 Primetime Emmys for programs and individual achievements on the “60th Annual Emmy Awards” which aired on ABC from the NOKIA Theater L.A. Live in Los Angeles, California.
Cable cleaned up tonight as HBO brought home 10 of the awards for which it received nominations, including five awards for the mini-series John Adams and two for the movie Recount. AMC took home three awards split between their two original shows, while FX got two, both for the drama Damages. Comedy Central got one Emmy each for The Colbert Report and The Daily Show with John Stewart.
On the other hand, NBC’s 30 Rock swept the Comedy category, winning four awards including two for Tina Fey, and for the second year in a row, it received the Emmy for best Comedy Series. The Lead Actress in a Comedy Series award went to Tina Fey for 30 Rock, for which she also won an Emmy for writing, and after seven nominations, Alec Baldwin finally won his first Emmy for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, also for 30 Rock. Best Drama Series went to AMC’s Mad Men in their first year eligible. Glenn Close won her 2nd Emmy as Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Damages, while Brian Cranston won his first Emmy for Lead Actor in a Drama Series for AMC’s Breaking Bad.
Jeremy Piven received his third consecutive Emmy win for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for playing Ari Gold on HBO’s Entourage and actress Laura Linney received her own third Emmy, this time for her performance in HBO’s John Adams. Paul Giamatti, Tom Wilkinson and writer Kirk Ellis were also honored for the acclaimed mini-series. CBS’ The Amazing Race had its sixth consecutive win in the Reality/Competition category, while Survivor‘s Jeff Probst won the first ever award for Reality Host.
