Inside Out Box Office Passes $700 Million

The Inside Out box office has just surpassed $700 million in ticket sales worldwide

Joy is quite likely the emotion in control for Disney’s Pixar Animation Studios today as the studio has confirmed that the worldwide Inside Out box office has crossed the $700 million mark. Inside Out is the fifth Pixar film and Disney’s seventh animated film ever to reach this threshold.

With $343 million earned domestically, Inside Out is the highest-grossing animated film of the year and the second-highest grossing Pixar film ever on original release, behind only Toy Story 3. The film debuted in the US and Canada on June 19 with $90.4 million, the biggest opening ever for an original property.

Internationally, Inside Out has earned $358 million. Currently open in about 81% of the marketplace, the film debuts in Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and Singapore this weekend. Major markets still to come include Germany, Italy, and China.

In the film, young Riley is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions: Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley’s main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.

Directed by Academy Award winner Pete Docter (Monsters, Inc., Up), Inside Out is produced by Jonas Rivera, p.g.a. (Up), co-directed by Ronnie Del Carmen (Up) features an original score by Michael Giacchino (The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Up).

It was announced at this year’s D23 Expo that Inside Out will get a mini sequel of sorts with the short film “Riley’s First Date?” set to be included on the home entertainment release November 3. You can check out a first clip from the short right here.
