The Series:
I used to watch “Smurfs” as a kid, so I was curious to see what my kids would think of it 27 years later. I put my 9 year old daughter, 6 year old son, and 3 year old son in front of the TV and played this DVD for them. The 9 year old bailed out after about 2 minutes. The 6 year old saw the 9 year old bail and decided he was too cool for it and left. The 3 year old would watch for a few minutes, play with a “Star Wars” toy, then start watching again. While this was going on, my wife and I debated whether or not Gargamel wanted to eat the Smurfs or use them as an ingredient to create gold. (For the record, I was right. He wanted to eat them. Weirdo.) Then the Smurfette episode started and all the kids returned to the room. They watched it for a while and seemed intrigued by the female Smurf.
So, at the end of the day, the Smurfs prevailed. They didn’t initially interest the kids, but eventually they were pulled in by it, especially the younger ones. If you have young kids, they’ll probably enjoy Smurfs like you did as a kid.
I was a bit disappointed by the bonus features on this DVD. I was looking for a featurette on the history of Smurfs, interviews with the cast, or other goodies. No such luck.
