Although About Last Night and two-time Hot Tub Time Machine franchise helmer Steve Pink was said to have become attached to the project last summer, Variety is today reporting that Jared Hess is now taking on directing duties for Walt Disney Pictures’ upcoming family action comedy Overnight at 42nd Street (previously known simply as Overnight).
Likened to Home Alone set in an FAO Schwarz-style toy store, Overnight at 42nd Street was scripted by Oren Uziel and follows an absent-minded, recently divorced father trying to save his relationship with his son — and defuse a hostage situation. Neither the father nor son have yet been cast, however, with the trade noting that finding the leads is the major challenge right now in making sure that Overnight at 42nd Street gets the green light.
Hess’ latest film, Don Verdean, stars Sam Rockwell, Danny McBride, Leslie Bibb, Amy Ryan, Will Forte and Jemaine Clement and was picked up for distribution via Lionsgate back in January.
Prior to either Pink or Hess’ involvement, Gangster Squad and Zombieland helmer Ruben Fleischer had been planning to direct. Will Hess be the one who finally gets Overnight at 42nd Street off the ground? Only time will tell, but check back for updates as they become available.
Overnight at 42nd Street is being produced by Ori Marmur and Neal Moritz.
