With his latest movie The Captive (formerly called “Queen of the Night”), Egoyan continues to explore the world of crime with a movie starring Ryan Reynolds and Mireille Enos as parents whose 9-year-old daughter has been kidnapped by a child pornography ring and held captive by a creepy individual, played by Kevin Durand. Over the course of eight years, they try to find out if their daughter is still alive with the help of a special law enforcement division led by Rosario Dawson and Scott Speedman trying to stop the pedophiles.
It sounds like a fairly simple thriller premise, but anyone who knows Egoyan will realize that not everything will be as it seems as he uses non-linear storytelling techniques to create a far more intriguing film, one that–dare we say it?–is quite captivating.
ComingSoon.net spoke with Egoyan a few months back for his previous film Devil’s Knot, but learning he was in New York to do some press for his latest, we sat down with him for an extended interview which you can watch in the video player below.
We talked about a lot of aspects of what he was hoping to achieve with The Captive, including the decision to skip the Toronto International Film Festival (Egoyan’s normal stomping grounds), plus we also talked briefly about his next film Remember, starring Christopher Plummer and Martin Landau, about why he feels that he doesn’t get the same critical support as some of his peers and how that may have affected perceptions about his previous movie.
The Captive opens in select cities on Friday, December 12.
