Synopsis:
This film was originally released in 1998.
Chance and Roberta Williams are a happy couple expecting a new baby. Lauren and Michael Hubbs are their friends, but they are significantly less happy. They consistently fight and their marriage is in jeopardy. When they all go to an amusement park together, Roberta and the unborn baby are killed in a freak accident. Michael feels responsible since he insisted they go on the ride that killed her.
Chance sinks into a deep depression. Lauren and Michael take him into their home so that they can keep an eye on them, but they continue to have their own problems. Chance, longing for a relationship again, moves in on Lauren. It turns out that at one time in the past they had an affair together. He wants to rekindle the relationship to fill the void in his life. However, Lauren resists his advances and tries to reconcile with Michael.
Chance is soon pushed over the edge and loses his sanity. He begins stalking the Hubbs and plots to remove his friend Michael from the picture permanently.
“Asunder” is rated R for violence, sexuality, and language.
The Movie:
This movie really has nothing to offer. The plot is predictable and the story nothing more than TV movie caliber with nudity, violence, and language thrown in to give it an “R” rating. The DVD cover compares the film to “Fatal Attraction” and “Unfaithful”, however the only similarity is that they all involve a stalker, infidelity, and a gory end to someone. There’s nothing unique or original about this movie. The DVD also quotes the Chicago Sun-Times as saying it “boldly exploits the slasher genre”. That’s incorrect, too, because this is not a slasher film. It’s just a drama that happens to have one scene where a guy threatens someone with a knife. It hardly qualifies it as a slasher film. This film is otherwise rather unremarkable.
This movie only has one thing going for it and that’s the cast. Blair Underwood, Debbi Morgan, and Michael Beach are all fine actors. They do a good job with what material they have to work with. Underwood makes a convincing psycho. However, this film doesn’t show off their best talents. Fortunately they all have other films under their belts to show what they can do.
The Extras:
There are no extra features on this DVD.
The Bottom Line:
This is a film only a card-carrying member of the Blair Underwood Fan Club could love. Otherwise, pass on it.
