Paramount Home Entertainment’s Dreamgirls topped the national DVD sales chart for the week ending May 6.

The musical generated $32 million in consumer spending its first week in stores, sellthrough and rental combined, and is on track to become the best-performing $100 million-plus May DVD release since The Last Samurai in 2004.

On Nielsen VideoScan’s First Alert sales chart, Dreamgirls scored an easy victory, bumping 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment’s Night at the Museum to No. 2. Lionsgate’s Happily N’Ever After made a strong debut at No. 4. Universal Studios captured the No. 6 and No. 7 slots with two other new releases: the crime thriller Alpha Dog and horror remake The Hitcher, respectively.

On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart, Dreamgirls was the highest-debuting new release of the week, entering the chart at No. 3 with estimated rental earnings of $6.7 million. “Museum” and Buena Vista’s Déjà Vu remained at No. 1 and No. 2 with rental revenue for the week of $9 million and $7 million, respectively.
