Disney CEO Bob Iger is hinting that some sort of Figment show might be in the works.
Figment is a Disney character that is featured in the Journey Into Imagination With Figment theme park ride at Walt Disney World Resort’s Epcot. The small purple dragon was originally created by Tony Baxter and Steve Kirk, among other collaborators, in 1983.
What did Bob Iger say about a potential Figment show?
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Iger was asked if there were any plans to use Figment in some form of media outside of the theme parks.
Iger answered, “This is my 24th year. 18th as CEO, and I think the question about Figment has been asked about 15 times. We know that he’s popular with shareholders, the fact that they ask questions about him all the time. But we also know that he’s popular at Epcot where you can meet him and journey into imagination. I’ll tell you why — I’ve been asked this so many times that I am going to ask our creative teams to consider making some form of series or short-form videos of Figment. Because obviously, he’s more popular than just a walk-around character in our parks and resorts.”
In September 2022, Deadline reported that Seth Rogen’s Point Grey was working on a Disney movie about Figment. Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit were announced as writers. There’s been little news about the project since then, and it’s unclear what state of development it is now in.
Figment has made minor cameo appearances in both 2015’s Inside Out and 2019’s Toy Story 4. He is also featured in much of the merchandise that is sold at Epcot.
Additionally, there was a five-part comic book miniseries titled Disney Kingdoms: Figment that launched in 2014. It was followed by a sequel that then came in 2015.
