A new report from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner notes that Jeff Baena and Aubrey Plaza were separated for months prior to the tragic passing of the director.
What does Jeff Baena’s latest report show?
The coroner’s report (via The Hollywood Reporter) on Baena notes that Plaza and Baena had separated in September 2024 and that Baena had been going to therapy after the couple experienced “recent marital difficulties” prior to his passing.
In October, Baena reportedly made “concerning remarks” to Plaza that caused her to ask a friend to perform a welfare check on her husband. It’s unclear what the outcome of the welfare check was, however. The coroner’s office’s report also notes that Plaza received a text from Baena on the morning of the day of his death.
Plaza and Baena wed in secret in 2021 after having been together in a relationship for 10 years prior. Following his passing, Plaza issued a brief statement on the matter, calling it an “unimaginable tragedy” and asking for privacy on the matter.
Baena was best known for co-writing the screenplay to the 2004 comedy I Heart Huckabees alongside David O. Russell as well as writing and directing the 2020 psychological drama Horse Girl starring Alison Brie (who also served as a writer on the film).
