Goldberg, who is set to retire later this year, reflected on the possibility of facing WWE World Heavyweight Champion Gunther in his final match. The Ring General and the WWE Hall of Famer had an intense face-off at WWE Bad Blood 2024.
The rivalry ignited when Gunther announced his goal of winning the new championship at Crown Jewel and later at Bad Blood. He then turned his attention to Goldberg, who was at ringside with his family. Known for his bold and personal remarks, Gunther took a shot at Goldberg’s parenting skills.
Goldberg immediately jumped over the barricade to confront Gunther, but security intervened to prevent a physical altercation. Their heated exchange sparked speculation about a potential future showdown. In November, Goldberg confirmed that he would have his retirement match in 2025.
With his intense confrontation with Gunther still fresh in fans’ minds, many believe the WWE Hall of Famer could face The Ring General as his final opponent.
Goldberg talks about facing Gunther in his retirement match
During his appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, Goldberg shared his thoughts on a potential retirement match against Gunther. He stated:
“If it was, then I mean, I guess I could look at it like I’m kind of passing the torch. You know, he’s a young talent comparatively. Well, everyone’s young comparatively. But he’s part of the new generation, and they need to be lifted. I’m not going to say lifted up, but I think if that were the case—if it was Gunther and me—then, I mean, it would be logical.”
He continued:
“There’s some heat there, obviously, that’s already been placed. And he’s the new generation; I’m the old generation. It’s kind of like a passing of the torch in a way. And, you know, I wouldn’t turn that one down by any stretch of the imagination, because you don’t ever open your mouth in front of my wife and my son negatively about me.”
Gunther, who is currently feuding with Men’s Royal Rumble winner Jey Uso, is set to defend the World Heavyweight Championship against him at WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas. It will be interesting to see if Gunther retains his title. If he does, could this set the stage for Goldberg’s return and a match against The Ring General? Only time will tell.
