WB’s Mickey 17 Cut Tested Better, Robert Pattinson Movie Will Lose $100 Million

Warner Bros. Pictures’ cut of Mickey 17 reportedly tested higher than the theatrically released version of the movie.

Mickey 17 was released in United States theaters on March 7, 2025. Directed by Bong Joon Ho, the Robert Pattinson-starring sci-fi movie, which is based on Edward Ashton’s Micky7 novel, didn’t do huge numbers at the domestic box office, as it made approximately $19.1 million during its opening weekend.

The movie’s budget was around $118 million, according to Deadline, not including prints and advertising.

Reactions toward the movie have been generally positive, with many praising Pattinson’s performance and Bong’s direction; however, many seem to agree that it’s not quite at the same level as the director’s last movie, Parasite. Mickey 17 currently has a 77 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 72 score on Metacritic.

What do we know about the Warner Bros. cut of Mickey 17, and why will the Robert Pattinson movie lose money?

According to a recent report from Puck, an early test screening of Mickey 17 went “badly, sources say, but director Bong dismissed the results, saying his Oscar winner Parasite didn’t test well, either.” It’s worth noting that Parasite only had a budget of around $11 million.

“Meanwhile, a knowledgeable source told me that Warners had come up with an alternative cut of Mickey 17 that tested 10 points higher,” Puck’s article further reads. “But the director had final cut and got his way. (Another source familiar with the situation insists the second cut did not test any higher than the first.) Based on the film’s $19 million domestic opening and B Cinemascore, a source estimates that the movie will fall $100 million short of breakeven at the box office. And industry insiders expect a rising tide of red ink as more of the studio’s risky movies open in theaters.”

Mickey 17 is now playing in United States theaters.
