Gemma Chan recently discussed the possibility of reprising her role as Sersi in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) following Eternals. While promoting her upcoming film The Actor, Chan addressed speculation about a potential return but admitted that actors are often the last to know about future projects. Her comments have sparked further discussion about the fate of Eternals characters and their unresolved storylines in the MCU.
Gemma Chan is ‘keeping faith’ for Sersi’s return in Marvel
In an interview with ComicBook, Gemma Chan, who portrayed Sersi in Eternals, addressed the possibility of returning to the MCU. She stated, “You never know. We’re often the last people to find out. I don’t know, I’m keeping the faith. I feel like there’s unfinished business there and there’s more story to tell, but we’ll see.”
Eternals, directed by Chloé Zhao, premiered in November 2021 and introduced a new team of immortal superheroes to the MCU. Despite its high-profile cast, including Richard Madden, Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Kumail Nanjiani, and Kit Harington, the film received mixed reviews. It was the first MCU film to receive a “rotten” critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed $402 million worldwide.
Marvel Studios confirmed last year that there were “no immediate plans” for the sequel of Eternals (via Inverse). However, events from the film have influenced Captain America: Brave New World, which includes the discovery of adamantium at Celestial Island, a landmass formed by Tiamut’s emergence. Despite this, no Eternals characters appeared in the film.
The Eternals post-credits scenes teased future storylines, including Dane Whitman’s transformation into Black Knight and the introduction of Harry Styles as Eros, Thanos’ brother. Marvel has yet to confirm any projects involving these characters. While referencing the Brave Nw World trailer, Kevin Feige stated, “There are, and I think you’ve seen maybe in a trailer we’ve released recently, an acknowledgment of some of those events. Certain giant things came out of the ocean.”
But it appears characters from Eternals could return in crossover films like Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo earlier stated that “anybody” from the MCU’s history could appear in these projects.
