Joe and Anthony Russo recently addressed rumors about Moon Knight and other Disney+ Marvel characters in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Anthony Russo did not confirm any names but stressed their broad approach to the MCU storytelling. This fueled speculation about returning heroes and Robert Downey Jr.’s role as Doctor Doom.
Anthony Russo talks Marvel TV heroes’ return in Avengers: Doomsday
In a conversation with TechRadar, the Russo Brothers addressed the possibility of Moon Knight and other Disney+ Marvel heroes appearing in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Anthony Russo said, “In terms of what we’re drawing on for our storytelling, we take the comprehensive view of the MCU. So, without getting into anything more specific than that, this is the universe we’re telling a story within. You can read into that what you like.”
The only officially confirmed cast member for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars is Robert Downey Jr., who will portray Doctor Doom. Downey Jr. previously played Tony Stark/Iron Man in the MCU from 2008 to 2019. Following the firing of Jonathan Majors, who was originally set to be the saga’s villain as Kang the Conqueror, Downey Jr. was announced as Doom at the San Diego Comic-Con 2024.
Joe Russo revealed to TechRadar that they are drawing inspiration from both Jim Shooter’s Secret Wars (1984) and Jonathan Hickman’s Secret Wars (2015). He stated, “Well, we always create our own version of the story. So, we use the comics as loose inspiration.” He added, “I grew up on the original run. That’s something that got me into Marvel comic books. The Hickman run is also fantastic [and they’re] very different from each other in a lot of ways, so we’ll draw inspiration from both of them.”
Reports indicate that Chris Evans may return to the MCU, though his role remains unconfirmed. Marvel Studios will release Avengers: Doomsday in 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027.
