Disney has revealed Mufasa: The Lion King’s Disney+ streaming release date. The Lion King prequel explores the origins of Mufasa and his unexpected rise to become king of the Pride Lands.
“Mufasa: The Lion King enlists Rafiki to relay the legend of Mufasa to young lion cub Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala, with Timon and Pumbaa lending their signature schtick,” the official synopsis reads. “Told in flashbacks, the story introduces Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost and alone until he meets a sympathetic lion named Taka—the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destiny—their bonds will be tested as they work together to evade a threatening and deadly foe.”

When is the Mufasa: The Lion King Disney+ release date?
Mufasa: The Lion King will begin streaming exclusively on Disney+ on March 26. Mufasa combines live-action filmmaking with photoreal computer-generated imagery.

The voice cast includes Aaron Pierre as Mufasa, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Taka, Tiffany Boone as Sarabi, Kagiso Lediga as young Rafiki, Preston Nyman as Zazu, Mads Mikkelsen as Kiros, Thandiwe Newton as Eshe, Lennie James as Obasi, Anika Noni Rose as Afia, Keith David as Masego, John Kani as Rafiki, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner as Timon, Donald Glover as Simba, Blue Ivy Carter as Kiara, and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala.
Oscar winner Barry Jenkins directed Mufasa from a screenplay by Jeff Nathanson. Producers include Adele Romanski and Mark Ceryak, with Peter Tobyansen attached as an executive producer. Lin-Manuel Miranda provided original songs for the soundtrack, and Dave Metzger composed the score.
Released on December 20, 2024, Mufasa opened to a disappointing $35.4 million domestically. However, Mufasa became a long-term box office hit, primarily due to a lack of competition in January. Mufasa’s worldwide gross stands at $712 million.
